Cognition in Motion™

Movement is not just physical.
It never was.

What is Cognition in Motion™?

Cognition in Motion™ is the neuro-informed layer that sits across all three Elements of The Preston Method™ — present in every session, at every level of training, for every client.

It is not a separate program. It is not reserved for neurological clients. It is not an add-on for people with complex conditions.

It is the recognition that every movement your body makes begins in your brain — and that training which ignores that connection is only ever doing half the work.

Why movement is a brain event

When you reach for something, stand up from a chair, catch your balance, or coordinate your arms and legs in a complex exercise — your nervous system is managing all of it.

Timing. Sequencing. Spatial awareness. Attention. Anticipation. Feedback. Adjustment.

None of that is muscular. All of it is neurological.

When a client says “I can’t do that” — the first question is always: is that physiological, or psychological? More often than not, the body is more capable than the mind currently believes.

Conventional training programs the muscle. The Preston Method™ trains the system — the brain and body working together, building the kind of movement that is not just strong, but reliable, coordinated, and genuinely functional.

What CIM brings to every session

Cognition in Motion™ integrates the following into movement work at every level:

  • Body awarenessKnowing where your body is in space and how it is actually moving.
  • Timing and coordinationThe ability to sequence movement smoothly and accurately.
  • Dual taskingCombining movement with cognitive demand — because real life rarely asks you to do just one thing at a time.
  • Attention and focusTraining the brain’s ability to stay present and engaged in the movement itself.
  • NeuroplasticityThe brain’s capacity to learn, adapt, and build new movement patterns through deliberate, repeated practice.

These are not abstract concepts. They show up in every session — in the way exercises are cued, sequenced, and progressed.

Why this matters for clients

Aging adults

CIM supports the neural pathways that govern balance, coordination, and the kind of sharp, responsive movement that prevents falls and maintains independence.

Neurological clients

For those living with Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, or early cognitive changes — CIM is where the most meaningful and measurable progress often happens.

Post-rehabilitation clients

CIM bridges the gap between clinical recovery and functional movement — rebuilding not just strength, but the neurological confidence to use it.

Performance clients

CIM sharpens the precision, timing, and body awareness that separates good movement from exceptional movement.

What we are really building

Many people arrive having spent years — sometimes decades — disconnected from their own bodies. Life gets busy. The body becomes something that carries you through the day rather than something you actually inhabit.

CIM is where that begins to change. Through deliberate, attentive movement practice, clients start to rebuild the awareness, coordination, and physical confidence that makes everything else possible.

This is not just training. It is reconnection.

CIM does not sit beneath the Elements. It governs them.

Every decision about how a session is designed, cued, sequenced, and progressed flows from the understanding that movement begins in the brain — not the muscle. This is not a specialty offering for complex clients. It is the intelligence behind everything The Preston Method™ does.
